Christel from Köln, Germany

Good evening, Magda
The little lady looks very nice, great with your summer hat. In our region, it would be too cold for a walk with these hats. The color selection for this scene I like very well. It looks a bit nostalgic and is very well expressed. I wish you a pleasant evening and thank you for your nice comments. Dear greetings Christel

Roman from Thunder Bay, Canada

Lovely... listening to Cesaria Evora at the moment and looking at my Xandinha... hm...
You know that I can say anything I want and get away with it, right ????... oh... you do, don't you?... OK then..
So here's my stinging critique (I feel like giving one):

Your last 3 posts, here's my evaluation.
The choice of the monotone and this particular shade of it.... sepia ( or whatever you call it...) is great. It gives the series a certain feel and mood and I think that's what you were after. A very good choice indeed (but I'll come back to the post-processing a bit later).

If I were to rate all three, Summer Hat 1 wins, hands down ! And why ? Well, you have a perfect balance between the main subject that is slightly off centre and the LH side that is actually complementing her face and pushing our eyes towards her eyes and that's what captures our attention. There is nothing distracting around it, and those eyes, are just.... incredible !!!

But the main reason this one wins, lies in her face expression; you've captured that unique moment of child's wander and curiosity... this is not posed, we want to know what she's thinking and that's what keeps us looking at the photo, we want to know what it is.

Hat 2, you've captured a nice pose, but nonetheless, it is a pose and it shows. Suggestion for you and other photographers: during a session like this, set you camera to continuous shooting mode, and as your model tries to assume the pose you want, fire off 3-4 shots. This way there is a greater chance you'll capture that unique expression....

In Hat 2, and to a lesser extent in Hat 3, the background flowers, although impressive and nice, compete with the main subject too much. Either make one or two of them (I remember them, they are big and gorgeous) intentionally part of your composition or blur them out. The point is, don't make your viewer guess, you take full charge of how you want the viewer to see your composition. You command the viewers' mood.

In Hat 3, I guess you wanted to show a sort of funky and playful way the girl adjusts here hut, especially with this gorgeous, rabbit style smile, in your face... sort of saying hey, look at me, I'm prettier than you !! (haha... and there is no argument from me here...)
But the problem I see is in cutting off her elbows on both sides. Show them because that is part of the message here, a beautiful girl is playing with here hat. I always give this advice to myself: before you squeeze the trigger, scan the peripherals in your viewfinder.

As I mentioned before I really like the monotone and the mood you've created using it. But I have just a few suggestions. OK, look at the Hat 1 and her eyes. Although they are in sharp focus and have the specular highlight in them, which is always desirable, they lost the distinction between the black pupil and a lighter iris, they became one big black eye.

And I think it's due to a slight over-processing. In a portrait and a composition like this, every detail counts and you have to pay attention to it. Since the eyes are always the first thing that draws our attention, make sure this distinction is preserved.
In Hat 2, the over-processing made here skin a little blotchy, especially on her legs. This is not flattering. I think you've pushed the contrast a tad too far. Pay attention to those details, they are important. That's what separates a good photograph from an outstanding photograph.

Also, in Hat 3 your lighting is good, there are no harsh shadows, but I think it's a bit too flat, coming straight at here face. Play with the angles and introduce delicate shadows that will accentuate her face features. This way you will increase the depth in you shot. If you have to sources of light, just play with the distance and angle.

Ok, I'm spent....
So how about this, for a short comment on you photo???? ....hehehe...

31 Jan 2010 8:05pm

@Roman: Now, that's what I call a wonderful and very helpful critique! Love it! :)) Yes, I agree with all you say and I saw many of those little pointers before uploading my photos :) I'm glad I can see that in my own photographs and I'm am very impressed you picked them up too :) By pointing them out to me you prove to me that I can't get away with just a mediocre photograph! I need to give 100% plus more! ;)

Scott F. Schilling from San Martin, United States

daniela scharnowski from Berlin, Germany

Hello Magda! I´ve been a bad visitor and commentator lately ;)
I just read Romans interesting critique and there are some very good points - but I don´t completey agree on the part with the elbows in this picture - I know people love to include all of their subject, but in this case I think the complete arms would make the scene look too staged. Because there´s something missing (our brains easily add the missing parts) it looks more original and spontaneous in my eyes, and that would be a plus.

20 Feb 2010 10:34am

@daniela scharnowski: Thank you very much Daniela :)
