Landscape

Posted by Magda (Vancouver, Canada) on 2 November 2008 in Landscape & Rural.

This one is for my uncle Roman and for Mr.Bill who've been very supportive and encouraged me to try the "dreaded" landscape photography I've been wanting to do but didn't know how. Well, this is my first attempt. I wish there were some nice horses in the foreground but this will have to do for now. ;) I took the advice to just go for a drive (without my children) and be inspired by nature.... Was I or was I not?

Thank you so much for taking your time to visit and comment on my photographs. It is greatly appreciated! :)

With so much of your positive feedback and encouragement I decided to go for it and turn my passion into a career. Thank you for the "kick" AM3 Friends! :)

Now this is a wonderful surprise! I love it. The meadow is such a lovely green and the trees and foliage let us know that it is autumn with their bright colors. A horse would have been nice, I grant you, but we can't have everything. Nice job Magda. Beautifully captured. I'm proud of you! Keep on keeping on!

@Bill: Thank you, Bill! I am glad you like it! :) I need to escape more often with just my camera and a tripod.. ;) (no kids!) LOL

Now, this is the spirit my Lovely !!!!! This is so great Madzia. And you see, it wasn't that dificult now, was it? ... I mean to leave the kids and house and all that behind, even if it was for couple of hours, to make it totaly YOUR time, you deserve it baby !!

As for the picture, the scene is beautiful, you know I love that area. And knowingly or not, you included right proportions of each element in the composition; the grass, the background and the sky meet roughly at one third line of the image.

But sometimes you have to break the rules... Now look at your picture again and think: "which element is the least interesting?"... the gray sky, right?.. because we tend to scan from the bottom to top, you lead the viewer from the lush green, throught the gorgeous fall colors to the gray sky... I personaly would eliminate the gray and crop the sky out in the view finder roughly at the top of the background trees.

And here's the thing, to finaly answer your question, were you inspired ?.... very often the art is not in the final image but ...... in the process of creating it. I bet you, in that moment you were not thinking about anything else but this landscape and what you see through your camera lens, and your finger on the shutter button... This is ART my baby, and you ARE and artist !

So, go out there and keep shooting...

cheers
Roman

@Roman: Well, thank you so much Roman! You know how much I appreciate your comments! You are the reason I am so in love with photography - I found my passion! (not counting my children, of course) (grin)
I wished the sky was more interesting too! :) I will play with this photograph and use your valuable points to make it look "better". I drove this road many times and it always made me say in my heart "what a beautiful place..." So when I finally made the dash out of the house alone I went straight to that spot. Boy, did I wish I had a ladder to climb onto and take this photo from a different perspective! I didn't feel that climbing on the roof of my car was the best idea but if there was a good looking tree around I would climb that! LOL I will try to escape more often, even for an hour or two - totally different experience when I am alone! I haven't done that in over 5 years! It felt great! ;)

I think it's beautiful. I like the horizontal lines in the foreground contrasting with the more random collection of trees, etc. Great colors, too. Landscapes are challenging, but this is a great start!

@willow: Thank you, Willow! :) Yes, landscapes are challenging.... I feel so "at home" when I do portraits but being out there, in the open was a bit overwhelming. But, I will keep trying.... :) Thank you for the encouraging words.

This is fascinating ... the photo is lovely, colors beautiful, etc., and the comments are wonderful.
With all the beautiful portrait work you do, I was amazed that landscapes were a "dreaded" element for you. Of course, landscapes of flat terrain are more difficult, though, but you worked with that. I like your Uncle Roman's suggestion that less sky could be good, and perhaps there are more shadows in the grassy foreground to compliment the beauty of the trees.

I sure like the wide format to this one and your use of 1/3rds in the composition is almost measurable ! I like, also that you cave caught that natural contrast between the paddock and the fall colors beyond . .
